“un-productivity” otsukei Dec.13-21
Otokage announces the last event of the year.
Next Saturday, December 13th to 21st,
We will be holding an exhibition with Tomo Kishida.
After the first exhibition in May 2022,
Thankfully, this will be the seventh time we hold this event.
We had a discussion about it the first time.
No matter how much time it takes,
No matter how expensive clothes are, they are only worth wearing.
It's hard to convey the quality of clothes just by looking at them on hangers,
In particular, clothes made from handwoven fabrics
The more you put it on, the more it will fit your body.
It grows slowly, changing its texture.
The more you wear it, the more you will love it.
It suddenly shows a new look.
I wanted to deliver that experience.
So, I don't want to put it too close to the category of handmade clothing,
The clothes are made by a designer called Tomo Kishida.
How can we convey this through the filter of Otokage?
Rather than pushing out the artist's personality,
I have been conscious of presenting it in the field of fashion.
As this continued, the excitement of the event gradually increased.
More and more people are actually picking up our products and trying them on.
We have been receiving a lot of customers.
Thank you so much for everything.
This time, we change our perspective and
I got to experience Tomo Kishida's activities,
I wanted to create an exhibition that would allow people to feel the passage of time.
That's because over the past four years, I've been spending more and more time with Mr. Kishida.
I often visit the atelier,
The time that flows naturally at his studio,
I started seeing it as it was.
That is how much time it takes
I think I get to see up close how a piece of clothing is made.
Of course, it takes time because it is handwoven,
Time to think about the pattern, time to prepare the yarn,
The time it takes to sew fabric into clothes.
There are many more steps to list,
Each of these processes has a similar flow of time,
It's hard to put into words,
Time flows slowly and deeply.
It's calm, yet somehow clear.
When I touch that flow,
Why do I like Kishida's clothes?
There is a moment when it suddenly makes sense.
No matter how you look at it, it seems "unproductive" and goes against the trend of the times,
I feel like I can sense "meaning" and "art" in it.
So that you can feel that,
This time, Tomo Kishida's activities will be more than ever before.
We are also preparing to allow you to fully enjoy the production process.
Tomo Kishida's studio will be set up within the Otokage space.
Each participant will create one piece of work during the eight-day exhibition period.
Please feel the process of how Kishida's work is born from his own hands with your own senses.
This exhibition is not only for fashion lovers,
For all of us who live in a somewhat busy modern world,
Feel the flow of time created by Tomo Kishida.
Feeling even a little "something",
I hope this will give you something to think about.
Finally, below is the exhibition description and production schedule.

tomo kishida exhibition at otsukei "un-productivity"
December 13 (Sat) – December 21 (Sun)
The age of productivity.
Since the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, the world has learned to be "fast."
Handmade manufacturing is
Gradually, the role was taken over by machines.
The process of making clothes changed from a dedicated household business to a division of labor in pursuit of efficiency. Production moved to factories.
Mass production of clothing progresses.
From then until today,
Clothing has followed a path of standardization.
In the name of "productivity," clothing has become increasingly consumerized.
The beauty that has been created through the long process of handcrafting
Before we knew it, we were left behind in the pre-industrial revolution era.
Tomo Kishida's project is
As if going back in time,
All processes are carried out in his own studio.
They are made by hand, taking time to create.
It is an attempt to regain something that has been lost in today's world where emphasis on productivity has become the norm.
Quietly, as if going against the flow of time,
The clothes are created slowly over time,
The beauty of "non-productivity" emerges now that mass production and mass consumption have become the norm,
It gives you a sense of the timeline that once flowed,
It brings us back to the "beauty of white space" that humans originally possessed.
This exhibition is titled "un-productivity"
In order to allow visitors to experience a different flow of time from modern "productivity," we have brought tools such as looms and sewing machines into the space of Otokage.
Tomo Kishida's production site was set up,
Each piece will be created over the course of eight days during the event.
They tear up cloth that has no further use and make thread,
The cloth is handwoven using the sakiori technique,
Draw a pattern to match the fabric,
It takes time to tailor a single piece of clothing.
In the quietness of a Kyoto townhouse that is over 100 years old,
Feel the flow of time that Tomo Kishida and I create.
Feeling just a little something,
I hope this will give you something to think about.
See you at the exhibition.
